E. M. Fulton House
Wise, Virginia
Registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places
The original owner, Elbert Martin Fulton, was a lawyer for the railroads at the turn of the century, and he built this Colonial Revival-style home in 1905 for his wife and 10 children. It has a total of four floors, with approximately 4,800 sf of living space on the main and second floors, plus a full unfinished attic and basement, for a total of approximately 9,600 sf. This lovingly restored brick home is located on approximately 1/3 of an acre on Main Street in the bustling town of Wise, VA, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachians in Southwestern Virginia.
The E. M. Fulton House features superior craftsmanship throughout, which has been lovingly restored and updated to include elements that accommodate the lifestyle of today, including an elevator that provides convenient access to all four floors, and a modern kitchen. Unique features include a custom-carved oak staircase off the entry foyer with a decorated newel post and a landing partway up, eight different styles of custom-carved oak and tiled fireplaces, and two sets of working oak pocket doors that slide into walls that are more than 12 inches thick. The ceiling-to-floor pocket doors between the front parlor, study, and foyer create a flexible open area. Many of the interior doors have working transom windows above them, which can be opened to help air circulate throughout the house during the warmer summer days.
A delightful aspect of this large home is that it has lots of natural light, streaming from 50+ windows, all of which feature recently-installed modern storm windows. Further adding to the spacious and elegant atmosphere is that the ceilings on the main and second floor are 12 feet
high. It's heated by two modern electric furnaces which send hot water for circulation through covered radiators in all the rooms. All plumbing and electrical wiring have been updated throughout the home.
E. M. Fulton used only the finest materials and craftsmanship available in his day to build this home. There is original oak flooring downstairs and original pine flooring upstairs, original oak trim throughout the house, and original oak wainscoting in the beautiful entry foyer, as well as crown molding in every room. Beyond the foyer on the first floor are a front parlor, dining room, study, breakfast room, kitchen, large back entrance mudroom, utility room, and 1 1/2 bathrooms. You can make your way to the second floor by using the elevator, the elegant main staircase, or the back staircase. The second floor has 4 bedrooms, plus two other rooms that have been used as a library and a sewing/craft room, although they had been used as bedrooms in the past, for a total of 6 bedrooms. There are also 2 full bathrooms on the second floor, for a total of 3 1/2 bathrooms. One of the bathrooms on the second floor also has a handicapped-accessible shower.
The home's property is lined by a hand-cut sandstone rock wall, which also can be seen as a distinctive feature throughout the town of Wise. There is a screened-in back porch and also a covered dual carport off the freshly-paved driveway, plus a separate tool or garden shed.
The E. M. Fulton house has turn-of-the-century craftsmanship and elegance, combined with the modern upgrades and restorations that have brought it honorably into the 21st century. And it's found within the setting of small-town living in beautiful Southwest Virginia, with mountain breezes, traditional values, and a distinct sense of place.
